How to Find the University That's Right for You
Use the 5 Ws to help you find your perfect match!
Thinking about university
Thinking about university can feel overwhelming, especially if you're considering different countries, along with different schools. As you discuss options with parents and supporters, ask yourself the questions below. The answers can help you with your search and options as you prepare to take the next step of your educational journey.
Who are you and who do you want to be?
This might seem silly, but it's important to think about who you are. Do you like math, big cities, and traveling abroad? Do you like science, smaller communities, and being close to home? Do you want to live where you study after graduation, or would you prefer to return to your home community? Think about who you are now and who you want to be when you're done university to help you start your search.
Pro tip: Who you are now and who you want to be could be two different people, and that's okay! University is a great place to learn more about yourself while you get your education.
What do you want to study?
The program you choose is a big deal, and it can feel overwhelming when every school offers the program you want. Carefully read the description of each program at each school and see what else is offered within that program. Is co-op available? Can you take interesting electives? Can you specialize in a certain area? These questions can help narrow down your choices.
Pro tip: Look at programs with interesting names, even if they don't seem like something you want to study. You might discover a new area of interest!
Where do you want to go?
If you're reading this article, you're probably considering universities in Canada. You might be looking at other countries, as well as options close to home. This question might be answered by the answers to the other questions, or it might be one you think about a bit more. What's most important is to choose the location that's right for you.
Pro tip: Canada ranks in the top 5 education systems in the world!
When do you want to start university?
The September (fall) term is when most students start university in Canada, but maybe you'd like to start in the winter or the spring? Or maybe you'd like to take English-language courses before you start university. Check to make sure your preferred programs are available for your preferred start term.
Pro tip: Even if most students start in September, it's okay to start in a different term if that's what's right for you.
Why are you considering a certain school or program?
As you make your list of where and what to study, ask yourself why you've added them to the list. If a certain program or school doesn't feel right for you, feel confident in taking them off the list!
Pro tip: Schools and programs could feel right or wrong at different times in your research. It's okay to add and remove them more than once as you go along.
How do you get in?
Admission requirements at each university can be different, so be sure you check what is required to get into your program, as well as your curriculum-specific requirements. Make sure you know if other documents are required, and check the deadlines so you get everything in on time.
Pro tip: The recruitment and admissions teams at universities are available to answer your questions and help you through the application process, so be sure to reach out if you need help.
Choosing the right university is more than finding the right program — it's about finding the place where you'll learn, live, and grow.
